What makes clouds white?

March 12th, 2010

  • Clouds are white because their water droplets or ice crystals are large enough to scatter the light of the seven wavelengths (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet), which combine to produce white light. Clouds will appear dark or gray when either they are in another clouds shadow or the top of a cloud casts a shadow upon its own base.

  • The colour of a cloud depends upon how it interacts with the sunlight. If the sunlight is fully scattered by the cloud,it looks white. If the cloud absorbs some sunlight and if you look at the cloud from the other side,it may look grey or black dependig upon the thickness of the cloud or the moisture content in it.

  • God.

  • Clouds are white due to scattering of sunlight, which we see as white light. In fact, clouds are little droplets of water suspended by various factors. They are too tiny to fall as rain, but they are not too tiny to reflect a tiny bit of sunlight.

If we went to another planet with a different sun than our own and that planet had clouds, we would see them as a different color because our eyes would see that sun as a different color.

Remember, white is not a color, it is an equal mix of colors, the same mix as ordinary sunlight.
